Nearer My God to Thee, Mississippi John Hurt

My friend Mike Carter has posted this song at his facebook page, and I wanted to post it here as well. For it got me thinking, not only of how much I love and appreciate the old bluesmen, but also of the irony of those who cry that classic English forms of speech, such as the pronouns thee or thy, cannot be apprehended by "ethnic" subcultures, or those who do not have PhDs after their name. The modern Church needs to be about the business of reaching people with the Gospel; she also must, however, stop insulting people with what amounts to elitism and racism by sending the message, in so many ways, that the best is just not for some people.
