Catechism of the Day

The Lord's Prayer continued

The Sixth Petition

And lead us not into temptation.

What does this mean?

God indeed tempts no one;
but we pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us,
so that the devil, the world, and our flesh
may not deceive us
nor seduce us into misbelief, despair,
and other great shame and vice;
and though we be assailed by them,
that still we may finally overcome and obtain the victory.

Sexta Petitio

Et ne nos inducas in tentationem.

Quae est huius petitionis sententia?

Deus quidem neminem tentat,
sed tamen petimus hac petitione, ut ipse nos custodiat et conservet,
ne Satanas, mundus et caro nostra nobis
imponant et nos a recta fide seducant et in superstitionem, diffidentiam, desperationem atque alia gravia scelera
et flagitia coniiciant,
et ut maxime eiusmodi tentationibus sollicitemur, ne succumbamus,
sed ut tandem vincamus ac triumphemus.
